Towards the end of my first pregnancy, I began experiencing severe lower back pain, which worsened significantly after delivery. The pain became so intense that I couldn’t even carry my baby upstairs or get in and out of bed. Sleep turned into an ordeal—I woke up every time I moved, and walking became almost impossible.
Obviously, I tried a multitude of treatments: physiotherapy, massage, exercises, chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, hypnosis… but nothing gave me lasting relief. As a doctor, I knew—and feared—the side effects of the medications I could take, particularly narcotics, so I avoided them, though the excruciating pain made this extremely difficult.
One day, a friend introduced me to a new, natural treatment, and to my surprise, it finally worked. I began using it with my patients, and they experienced relief as well. A research project I conducted further demonstrated how effective this treatment is for relieving pain.
Word quickly spread, and so many people sought my treatment that I decided to limit my practice to those with severe chronic pain. Many doctors began referring their 'hopeless' pain cases to me.
Unfortunately, the initial treatment didn’t work for everyone. It required numerous injections, making it both costly and time-consuming, and some of my patients couldn’t afford it, others feared the needles. By that point, I was treating a wide range of people with different types of pain, and I wanted all of them to get better. Using my medical knowledge, I began researching and developing new, natural treatments, like corrective exercises or pain cream, that patients could continue on their own. My research demonstrated the effectiveness of these treatments, with 80% of the 'hopeless' pain cases finding relief.

Clinical Instructor, Department of Family Practice, University of British Columbia
Dr. Bertrand, a McGill Medical School graduate, became a family practitioner in 1965, focusing on complex health problems. In 1983, she moved to Victoria, BC, and worked with alcohol and drug programs. She researched dopamine’s role in addiction and Parkinson’s disease, leading to a breakthrough in smoking cessation using bromocriptine.
In 2003, after prolotherapy helped her chronic back pain, Dr. Bertrand incorporated this treatment into her practice, later publishing research on prolotherapy for shoulder pain in 2016. In 2012, she developed QR Cream, a natural mannitol-based topical pain reliever. Research showed QR Cream reduced pain by 53%, outperforming other topical treatments. She co-directs MaryHelene Enterprises Inc., which distributes QR Quick Relief Pain Cream.
Dr. Bertrand also developed the Sacroiliac Forward Flexion Test (SIFFT) to treat low back pain from sacroiliac malalignment. A 2015 study showed 90% of patients experienced immediate relief with her corrective exercise.
