Dr. Hélène Bertrand received her MD from McGill University in 1965, at age 22. She has always been passionate about solving her patients’ complex problems, doing research to check how well the solutions she found worked, and teaching. In the last 12 of her 55-year medical practice she concentrated on treating painful conditions. Dr. Hélène Bertrand was born in 1943 and raised in Montréal by her French-Canadian parents. Her first years of study took place at a French lycée, College Marie de France, from which she graduated with a BA at the age of seventeen. She finished her studies and received her medical degree from McGill University in 1965 and started working part-time as a family practitioner assisting her father, neurosurgeon Claude Bertrand. From there, she grew a practice of her own. She has always been passionate about solving her patients’ complex problems, including one of the most difficult ones to diagnose and treat—low back pain.
